Laying Laminate Flooring

Be sure to read these instructions more than once to make sure you understand them. The next step is to gather all your materials ahead of time. It sounds simple but sometimes people without home improvement experience may forget to gather their supplies first. Or, they may end up needing something they don't have. For the basic laminate flooring job you will need a pry bar, rubber mallet, saw, duct tape and measuring tape. Of course you will also need the flooring and underlayment.

Some floors come with the underlayment already attached. If this is the case with your floors you may not want or need to use additional padding. The only underlayment you would need in this case is a vinyl sheeting if you're covering concrete. Vinyl sheeting should not be placed over hardwood. If you are installing underlayment, make sure it doesn't overlap and tape the seams with duct tape. There should be a quarter inch expansion space between the wall and the flooring. This will allow the floor to shift and expand with moisture and temperature changes.

You might think that this expansion space will look unsightly, but it can be easily concealed with trim molding. Speaking of molding, it should be removed before the floors are put down. Actually installing the floors is literally a snap. Most laminate flooring uses a tongue and groove system where the pieces just snap together like a puzzle. You want to stagger your joints when installing, which means you don't line up all your cuts perfectly. Staggering the joints provides for added stability.
